How to Store Cannabis: Keep Your Weed Fresh for Months

You picked up a fresh ounce, and two weeks later it smokes harsh, smells like hay, and crumbles to dust. Nothing was wrong with the flower — it was the storage. Cannabis is a dried plant product, and like coffee or tea, how you store it decides how long it stays good.

Here's exactly how to keep your weed fresh — whether it's a couple of grams or a full ounce from our cannabis flower shelf.

The Four Things That Ruin Weed

Every storage rule comes down to protecting your flower from the same four enemies:

A UCLA-cited rule of thumb: weed stored badly can lose a noticeable chunk of its THC within months, while the same flower stored right is still enjoyable a year later.

The Golden Rules

1. Glass, Airtight, and the Right Size

A glass jar with a rubber-sealed lid (a basic mason jar works) beats everything else. Plastic baggies hold a static charge that literally rips the trichomes — the frosty, potent part — off your buds. And an oversized jar traps a jar's worth of oxygen with a gram of flower, so match the container to the amount.

2. Cool and Dark Wins

A cupboard or drawer away from the stove, window, and any electronics is ideal. Light is the single fastest destroyer of cannabinoids — the same reason beer comes in brown bottles.

3. Control the Humidity

The sweet spot for flower is 55–62% relative humidity. 4. Don't Grind Ahead

Grind what you're using today. Ground flower has vastly more surface area exposed to air and goes stale in days, not months. Whole buds keep their terpenes locked inside.

The Freezer Myth

Don't freeze your flower. Freezing makes trichomes brittle — they snap off every time the bud moves, and you pour the potency out with the shake. The fridge is nearly as bad: the humidity swings every time the door opens, which invites mould. Room temperature, dark, airtight. That's it.

A few product-specific notes:

• Pre-rolls are the most fragile thing you can buy — they're already ground. Keep them in their tube, airtight, and smoke them within a few weeks.
• Concentrates like our in-house shatter and live resin keep best cold, airtight, and dark — parchment inside a sealed container. For months-long storage, the freezer is actually correct for concentrates (unlike flower).

Does Weed Actually Expire?

Old weed won't hurt you the way spoiled food does — with one exception: mould. If you see white fuzz (not trichomes — fuzz), smell ammonia or a musty basement note, throw it out. Don't smoke mouldy cannabis, full stop.

Otherwise, old weed just gets weaker and sleepier: THC slowly converts to CBN, which is mildly sedative. A year-old jar hits more like a nap than a high.

Quick FAQ

How long does weed stay fresh in a plastic bag? Days, maybe a week or two. The static pulls trichomes off and the thin plastic breathes. A $2 mason jar outperforms any bag.

Are humidity packs worth it? For anything more than a couple grams, yes — they're the cheapest insurance there is on an ounce.

Can I revive dried-out weed? Partially. A humidity pack in the jar for a day or two restores moisture and smoothness — but terpenes that evaporated are gone for good.

What about smell? An airtight glass jar is also the best odour control. If it's sealed enough to keep air out, it's sealed enough to keep smell in.
