An ounce of weed is 28 grams, and in Canada it runs roughly $75 to $300. That's a four-fold spread for the same weight, and it comes down to grade, not geography — the same 28 grams that costs $75 as outdoor-grown shake costs $300 as top-shelf indoor.
Here's how the pricing actually works: the per-gram math, what genuinely separates the tiers, and how to tell which end of the range you're being quoted.
19+ only. Cannabis is for adults 19 and older across Canada — except Quebec, which is 21, and Alberta, which is 18.

Working out the cost of a single joint rather than a whole ounce? That's in how much is a joint.
Cannabis is sold in metric, but everyone still talks in imperial. The conversions to know:
| Common Name | Weight | Typical Joint Count* |
|---|---|---|
| Gram | 1 g | 2–3 |
| Eighth | 3.5 g | 7–10 |
| Quarter | 7 g | 14–20 |
| Half | 14 g | 28–40 |
| Ounce (a "zip") | 28 g | 56–80 |
*At 0.3–0.5 g per joint.
The key principle: price per gram drops as quantity rises. A gram bought as a gram might cost $10+; the same flower inside an ounce might work out to $3–5 per gram. If you know what you like, buying bigger is the single easiest way to save.
Rough market lay of the land:
| Tier | Typical Ounce Price | What You're Getting |
|---|---|---|
| Budget / smalls | $60–100 | Small buds, shake-adjacent, older harvests — fine for grinding |
| Mid-shelf (AA–AAA) | $100–180 | Solid everyday flower, good potency |
| Top-shelf (AAAA+) | $180–300+ | Craft-grade buds, loud terps, maximum bag appeal |
A few things move the number around:
Where we ship, what the local legal options actually are, and the age checked at your door — it differs by province more than most people expect:
Alberta (18+) · British Columbia · Saskatchewan · Manitoba · Ontario · Quebec (21+) · Nova Scotia · New Brunswick · PEI · Newfoundland & Labrador · Yukon, NWT & Nunavut
City guides: Montreal · Halifax · Vancouver · Charlottetown · Moncton
Adults 19+ can possess up to 30 grams of dried cannabis in public — slightly more than an ounce. At home, there's no possession cap in Ontario.
Not necessarily — it's usually smalls or a value harvest rather than anything wrong. Potency is often respectable; you're mostly giving up bud size and bag appeal.
Depends on your habits. Heavy daily smokers get the best value from ounces; occasional users sometimes do better with edibles (see the dosing guide), vapes, or concentrates, which deliver more sessions per dollar at low doses.
