AAAA, AAA & Quad Weed: What Cannabis Grades Actually Mean in Canada

Every online dispensary in Canada sorts its flower into letter grades. AA, AAA, AAAA — "quads" if you talk to anyone who's been buying a while. The grades appear on menus like they came down from an inspector with a clipboard. They didn't. Nobody regulates them, nobody audits them, and the same jar can be a AAA on one site and a AAAA on another.

That doesn't make grades useless. It makes them a seller's claim rather than a fact — and once you know what the claim is supposed to describe, you can check it yourself in about thirty seconds with the jar in your hand.

Where the Grading System Came From

The A-scale is Canadian slang, not Canadian law. It grew out of the pre-legalization mail-order scene, where buyers couldn't see a product before paying and needed shorthand for "how good is this." Sellers borrowed the look of an official grading system — the kind used for maple syrup or beef — and applied it to flower.

Health Canada doesn't use it. Provincial boards don't use it. There is no lab test that outputs "AAAA." What you're reading is a store telling you which shelf a product sits on in that store.

That's why the honest way to read a menu is relative, not absolute:

A $40 "AAAA" ounce and a $220 "AAAA" ounce are not the same product. Price is the more honest signal, because price is the one thing a seller can't inflate without losing the sale.

What Actually Differs Between Tiers

Strip the letters away and there are five real variables. These are the things growers spend money on, and they're the things you can verify yourself.

1. Cure

The single biggest one, and the one buyers underrate most. Flower that was dried slowly and cured for weeks in controlled humidity smokes smooth and tastes like the strain. Flower that was rushed to market smells like hay or fresh-cut grass, burns harsh, and tastes green no matter how strong it is.

Cure costs a grower time and storage space, which is why it's the first thing cut on value flower.

2. Trim

Hand-trimmed buds keep their trichomes and their shape. Machine-trimmed buds are faster and cheaper to process, but the tumbler knocks resin off and rounds the bud into a ball. Machine trim isn't a defect — it's a cost decision — but you can see it.

3. Bud structure and density

Top-tier indoor flower is dense and holds its shape when you squeeze it. Greenhouse and outdoor flower is usually airier. Airy isn't bad; it just means more volume for the same weight, and it tends to burn faster.

4. Trichome coverage

The frost. More visible resin generally means more cannabinoids and more terpenes surviving to your jar. This is the one people photograph, and it's also the easiest thing to make look good under a macro lens, so weigh it against smell.

5. Terpenes — the smell

Terpenes are volatile. They evaporate with heat, time, and rough handling. Strong, specific smell through a sealed bag is the best single indicator that flower was handled well from harvest to shelf. Weak smell means terpenes are gone, and no THC number brings them back.

THC percentage is the variable that matters least. A well-cured 19% flower with a loud terpene profile will out-smoke a harsh, hay-smelling 27% every time. High numbers sell jars; cure and terps determine whether you enjoy them.

How to Judge Flower Yourself

You don't need a microscope. In order of usefulness:

1. Smell it first. Loud, specific, and distinct from "generic weed" is what you want. Hay, grass clippings, or ammonia are all cure problems.
2. Squeeze a bud. It should give slightly and spring back. Crumbling to dust means over-dried. Squishing wet means under-dried, which is a mould risk.
3. Snap a stem. A clean snap means properly dried. A bend means residual moisture.
4. Look at the trim. Are the sugar leaves cut close and neat, or is the bud round and scuffed?
5. Watch the ash. Light grey to white ash means a clean flush and a proper cure. Dark, chunky black ash that won't hold together points at leftover nutrients.
6. Notice the harshness. A cough that hits your chest rather than your throat is usually a cure issue, not a potency one.

That's roughly a six-fold spread between the bottom and the top of the same shelf. Anyone claiming their $35 ounce and their $200 ounce are both "quad" is telling you the letters mean nothing to them.

Which Tier Should You Actually Buy?

Be honest about what you're using it for.

• You smoke daily and mostly want volume. Value ounces. A $34.50 ounce is about $1.23 a gram. You will notice it's not boutique flower. You will also not care by day three.
• You smoke regularly and want it to taste like something. The $40–46 ounce band is where most people land and stay. It's the best ratio of enjoyment to money on the whole wall.
• You smoke occasionally and it's a treat. Buy premium by the gram or the eighth. Spending $197 on an ounce you'll take four months to finish is how good flower turns into stale flower.
• You're rolling for a group, or making edibles. Value flower, every time. Nobody tastes the cure in a batch of butter, and infusion doesn't care about bag appeal.

Most regular buyers end up keeping two jars: a cheap ounce for the day, and a few grams of something good for when they'll notice.

Storing It So the Grade Survives

Whatever you paid for, cure keeps degrading after it reaches you. Glass jar, sealed, dark cupboard, room temperature, roughly 55–62% relative humidity. No fridge, no freezer, no plastic bags. That's the whole method — the full version is in our guide to keeping weed fresh for months.

An ounce stored badly drops a full tier in six weeks. An ounce stored properly is still good at four months.

The Short Version

Grades are a store's own shorthand, not a standard. Read the price ladder instead, then verify with your nose, your fingers and the ash. Cure and terpenes decide whether you enjoy flower; THC percentage mostly decides what the label brags about.
