Menthol cigarettes left mainstream Canadian retail in 2017. Ontario's provincial ban took effect January 1, 2017, and the federal flavoured-tobacco ban followed that October, sweeping menthol cigarettes, most cigars, and blunt wraps off convenience-store and gas-station shelves nationwide. Big-brand menthols — Belmont Menthol, Export 'A' Menthol, du Maurier Menthol — disappeared and never came back.
Health Canada's reasoning: menthol's cooling effect masks the harshness of smoke, which made menthols a common starter product for young smokers. Whatever you think of the policy, mainstream menthols were gone almost overnight — and menthol smokers had to pick a lane.
Six Nations of the Grand River has carried its own tobacco trade for generations — the same nation-to-nation trade behind every native cigarette brand on our wall. That trade never revolved around what's stocked at the corner gas station, and menthol never disappeared from it.
