There's a line running through the concentrate shelf that most menus don't explain: some extracts are made with solvents, and some aren't. Shatter, live resin, distillate and diamonds all use a chemical solvent β usually butane or CO2 β to strip cannabinoids off the plant. Rosin doesn't. It uses ice water, heat and pressure, and nothing else.
That difference is the whole reason solventless costs two to four times as much per gram. Here's what you're actually paying for.
19+ only. Cannabis concentrates are for adults 19 and over in Ontario. Concentrates are potent β start far smaller than you think.
Solventless is a manufacturing method, not a marketing tier.
The process, start to finish:
No butane. No CO2. No ethanol. Nothing to purge, because nothing was added. What comes out is the plant's own resin, mechanically separated.
Solvent extraction isn't dangerous or dirty β properly purged BHO is a clean product and it's most of what the market runs on. But the two categories genuinely differ:
| Solventless (rosin, hash) | Solvent-based (shatter, live resin, diamonds) | |
|---|---|---|
| How it's made | Ice water, heat, pressure | Butane, CO2 or ethanol, then purged |
| Residual solvent | None β there was never any | Trace amounts, tested and regulated |
| Yield from input | Low β needs excellent starting flower | High β works with lower-grade material |
| Flavour | Closest to the living plant | Very good, slightly flatter on terpenes |
| Price per gram | High | Moderate |
| Why it costs what it does | Wasteful process, premium input required | Efficient process, flexible input |
The economics are the key insight. Solvent extraction can rescue value from mediocre flower β that's a feature. Rosin can't. If the input flower is poor, the rosin is poor, and the yield is terrible on top of it. Solventless is expensive because it starts expensive and wastes most of what it starts with. That's it. There's no mystique.
A few terms that actually carry information:
Colour is worth less than people think. Light blond rosin is often excellent, but it can also mean the material was fresh and nothing more. Smell and texture tell you more.
We've brought in a full solventless line rather than a token gram of it, so the price ladder is visible:
| Product | Format | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Poncho Farms Live Hash Rosin 2g | Two grams, multiple cultivars β Mango Fuel, Blueberry Zyrup, Original Papaya, Rainbow Driver, Sour Garlic Bananas and more | $207 |
| Hash Rosin (In-House) | Pressed in-house | $51.75 |
| Green Castle Live Hash Rosin Cart 1G | 510-thread cartridge, live rosin | $92 |
| Big Drip Solventless 1g | All-in-one solventless pen | $34.50 |
| Solventless Doobys | Pre-roll pack infused with solventless hash | Pack pricing |
| Solventless Extracts | Rotating solventless selection | Varies |
| Solventless 28g Infused Milled Flower | Ounce of milled flower infused with solventless | $207 |
For comparison, the solvent-based shelf runs Drizzle Shatter 1g at $17.25, Gladiator 1g Live Resin at $23, Kush Kraft Liquid Diamonds at $28.75 and Euphoria 2g Live Resin at $46. Both shelves are worth having. They're for different occasions.
If you want the full picture on the solvent side, we wrote a separate guide on shatter, live resin, hash and diamonds.
Rosin is more delicate than shatter. Two rules matter more than the rest.
Dab low. Rosin's terpenes start burning off around 260Β°C, and above about 290Β°C you're destroying exactly what you paid for. Aim for 150β200Β°C (300β390Β°F). On a torch-and-banger setup, that means heating the quartz, then waiting 45β60 seconds before you drop the dab. Cold-start (reverse) dabbing β load first, then heat gently from below β is the most forgiving method for rosin and the one we'd suggest if you're new to it.
If you're dabbing rosin at the same temperature you'd use for shatter, you're paying rosin money for a shatter experience.
Store it cold and dark. Rosin degrades faster than solvent extracts because there's nothing stabilizing it. Airtight glass or silicone, in the fridge for anything you'll finish inside a month, freezer for longer. Let it come back to room temperature before opening the container, or condensation forms on it. Left on a warm counter, rosin will darken and lose its nose within days.
Start smaller than you think. A rice-grain dab of good rosin is a full experience. Concentrates in this range routinely test between 60% and 80% total cannabinoids, against roughly 20% for flower. If your reference point is a joint, treat your first dab as one-tenth the size you'd guess.
Not ready to buy a rig? The solventless cart and Big Drip pen get you most of the flavour with none of the equipment, and they're the sane place to start.
Honestly: it depends what you notice.
Worth it if you already care about terpene profiles, you dab at low temperatures, you've noticed distillate carts taste flat, or you want the cleanest-tasting concentrate available at any price.
Not worth it if you're chasing maximum THC per dollar β distillate wins that easily β or if you dab hot, or if you're mostly using concentrates to boost a joint. A hash blunt or an infused pack does that job for a fraction of the cost.
There's no wrong answer. There's just a lot of people paying rosin prices and then torching it at 400Β°C, which is the one genuinely wasteful outcome.
The whole solventless line sits on our extracts page, with the solvent-based shelf on concentrates and vapes on THC vapes.
