Papers get all the attention. The gear around them costs a few dollars each, gets bought as an afterthought, and makes more day-to-day difference than switching brands of paper ever will.

This is the rest of the kit — what each piece is for and whether it's worth the money.

Cones: For People Who Don't Want to Roll

A cone is a paper already rolled into shape with the filter tip fitted. You fill it, tamp it, twist the end. No tuck, no lick, no technique.

This is the honest answer for most people who say they can't roll. Rolling is a skill that takes weeks to get right and cones skip the whole thing for pennies. Experienced rollers use them too, because a cone packs more evenly than most people roll by hand.

Pop Cones multi-packs are $5.75. King Palm at $5.75 is the palm-leaf version — a whole leaf rather than a paper, slower burning and larger.

If you'd rather not fill them either, that's what pre-rolls are for.

Trays: Unglamorous, Immediately Obvious

A rolling tray is a shallow metal or plastic dish with a raised lip. That's the entire product.

It sounds like something you don't need until you use one. Everything that falls off the paper falls into the tray instead of the carpet, and over a month that's a real amount of material you'd otherwise have swept up. The lip is what does the work.

Joint trays are $11.50. It's the accessory people are most surprised they use every single time.

Lighters: Not All the Same Flame

Regular flame lighters are fine for papers and the default for most people. Clipper Butane XL is $8.63 — refillable, with a removable flint system that doubles as a poker. Clippers are the shop standard for a reason: you refill them instead of replacing them, and the round body doesn't burn your thumb the way a rectangular one does on a long light.

Torch lighters burn hotter, in a directed jet, and stay lit in wind. You need one for concentrates and glass work; you don't need one for a joint, where the extra heat scorches more than it lights. Torch Jet Lighter, $10.35.

Hemp wick is the third option and the one worth explaining. It's twine coated in beeswax. You light the wick from a lighter, then light your bowl from the wick.

The reason is butane. A lighter flame burns around 1,900°C and you're inhaling combustion products from the fuel along with the smoke. Hemp wick burns cooler and cleaner, and the difference in taste on the first pull is noticeable — this is the accessory people are most sceptical of and most quickly converted by. Storage: Smell and Freshness

Cannabis dries out and cannabis smells. Storage handles both.

Skunk Sack Large bags are $2.30 — smell-proof, sealable, and the cheapest thing on this page. Worth having for transport more than for storage.

Cigarette cases run $8.63 to $11.50 and are as useful for pre-rolls as for cigarettes. A joint in a pocket gets crushed; a joint in a case doesn't.

• Buy if you care about taste → hemp wick. The most underrated item here.
• Buy if you're on concentrates → torch. Otherwise skip it.
• Buy if you travel with it → Skunk Sack, $2.30.
• Skip until you need it → anything described as premium that does the same job as the cheap one.
