Two carts sit side by side on the shelf. One is $17.25 and one is $92. Both say 1 gram. Neither label explains the gap.
The difference is almost never the hardware. It's what's inside β and there are five distinct things it could be. Here's what separates them, in plain terms, with what each one actually costs on our shelf.
19+ only. Cannabis vape products are 19+ in Ontario.
Cannabis stripped down until almost nothing is left but THC. Everything else β the terpenes that carry smell and flavour, the minor cannabinoids β gets removed in the process. Potency is high and consistent. Taste is essentially nothing.
Because the terpenes are gone, most distillate carts have flavour added back in afterwards. That's why a distillate cart can taste like blue raspberry: the fruit taste isn't from cannabis at all.
This is the entry tier and there's no shame in it. It's consistent, it's cheap, and if you want effect without ceremony it does the job. Rocket Pop 1g Cart is $17.25, and Knock Out THC vapes are $17.25.
Full Spectrum Extract. Instead of stripping the plant down, FSE tries to keep the whole profile β cannabinoids and the plant's own terpenes together. HTFSE is the high-terpene version, which is the more aromatic end of the same idea.
The practical difference from distillate is immediate: it tastes like the plant rather than like candy, because the flavour is the plant's own. It's the first real step up, and it's a small one in price. Mumbles Cart HTFSE is $23 and Green Castle FSE Cart 1 gram is $28.75.
If you have only ever used distillate, this is the jump worth making. It costs a few dollars and changes the entire experience.
"Live" is the important word. The plant is frozen immediately at harvest instead of being dried and cured first, then extracted from frozen. Freezing preserves the volatile terpenes that drying drives off.
The result tastes markedly closer to the living plant than anything made from dried material. It's the type most people mean when they say a cart tastes good. Still made with solvents β the "live" refers to the starting material, not the method.
Pem 2g LR Cart is $46. In pen form, Pem Live Resin Pen is $34.50 and the Gas Gang Live Resin 2g Pen is $57.50.
THCA crystallises into solid "diamonds" during extraction. Liquid diamonds means those crystals redissolved into a terpene-rich sauce β the highest-potency format that still carries real flavour.
Potent and aromatic at once, which is the selling point. This is the top of the solvent-based ladder. Pem 2g LD Cart is $40.25, and the Phoenix 2g Switch pen pairs Delta 9 with liquid diamonds at $40.25.
The only category on this list made with no solvents at all. Ice water and agitation separate the trichomes from the plant, then heat and pressure squeeze the rosin out. Water, temperature, pressure. Nothing else.
It is the most expensive by a wide margin and the reason is yield: it takes a great deal of flower to press a small amount of rosin, and only good flower is worth pressing. Poor material simply doesn't produce.
Whether it's worth triple the price is a genuine question and depends on whether you'll notice. People who care about taste above all say yes without hesitation. Green Castle Live Hash Rosin Cart 1G is $92. The cheaper way in is Big Drip Solventless 1g at $34.50.
| Extract | What it is | On our shelf |
|---|---|---|
| Distillate | THC isolated, flavour added back | $17.25 |
| HTFSE | Whole-plant, high terpene | $23 |
| FSE 1g | Whole-plant, full spectrum | $28.75 |
| Solventless 1g pen | Ice-water hash rosin | $34.50 |
| Liquid diamonds 2g | THCA crystals in terpene sauce | $40.25 |
| Live resin 2g | Frozen-fresh, solvent extracted | $46 |
| Live hash rosin 1g | Solventless, pressed | $92 |
Read the per-gram column carefully. A 2g live resin cart at $46 is $23 a gram β the same as the HTFSE gram. Size does a lot of work in this market.
A 510 cartridge screws onto a battery you already own. A disposable pen arrives with the battery built in and is discarded when empty.
Cartridges are cheaper per gram and let you keep one good battery for years. Pens win on convenience and on multi-gram value, which is where the real bargains sit:
That 6g Territory pen works out to about $13.42 a gram β less than the cheapest 1g cartridge on the shelf. If you know you'll finish it, volume is where the value is. If you like variety, it isn't.
We wrote up the hardware side separately in Cannabis Vapes Explained.
For carts, the mouthpiece should point up. For pens, it matters less but doesn't hurt.
