Yes. It is legal for an adult in Canada to buy native cigarettes online, where the seller and the buyer both meet the rules.
The rules are not complicated. You have to be of legal age in your province. The shop has to be a genuine Indigenous retailer selling on territory. The parcel has to be age-verified at the door by Canada Post. And what you buy has to be for you, not for resale.
That last one is the only part people get wrong.
19+ only. Smoking harms your health. This page explains how the law works for adults who already smoke β it is not legal advice, and it is not encouragement to start.
The federal rules are the same everywhere. The age is set by each province, and it is not 19 everywhere β Prince Edward Island is 21, which a lot of pages about this get wrong.
| Province or territory | Legal tobacco age |
|---|---|
| Alberta | 18 |
| Manitoba | 18 |
| Quebec | 18 |
| British Columbia | 19 |
| Ontario | 19 |
| Saskatchewan | 19 |
| New Brunswick | 19 |
| Nova Scotia | 19 |
| Newfoundland & Labrador | 19 |
| Yukon, NWT & Nunavut | 19 |
| Prince Edward Island | 21 |
If you are under that age where you live, no shop in Canada can legally sell to you, and Canada Post will not hand the parcel over.
This is the part that actually decides whether an order is above board, and it is the part most sites skate over.
Healing Room Six Nations is an Indigenous-owned shop with a real storefront at 7147 Indian Line Rd, Ohsweken, on Six Nations of the Grand River β the largest First Nations community in Canada. The business operates on that territory under Six Nations and Haudenosaunee law. You can drive to it.
Several of the brands we sell are manufactured on that same territory. Oakdale, Putters and DK's Premium are made by Grand River Enterprises, a tobacco manufacturer based on Six Nations that has been operating since 1996 and exports internationally.
That matters because "native cigarettes" is a phrase anyone can put on a website. A legitimate seller can tell you which nation it operates on, where its building is, and who made the tobacco. If a site cannot answer those three questions, that is worth noticing before you order anywhere.
Every tobacco shipment in Canada is age-verified on delivery. This is a Canada Post requirement that applies to every tobacco retailer in the country, not a policy any shop chose.
There is more detail in can someone else accept my cigarette delivery, including what happens when a parcel is addressed to one person and collected by another.
This is the part that makes people nervous, so here it is plainly.
Most cigarettes sold in a Canadian shop carry an excise stamp, which shows federal duty has been paid, and the shelf price also carries a provincial tobacco tax. Between them, tax is most of what you pay for a $130 carton.
Tobacco sold on territory by an Indigenous retailer sits outside that provincial retail tax structure. That is not a loophole anyone invented β the tobacco trade on Haudenosaunee territory predates the tax structure by a long way, and it is why a carton costs $22.50 here instead of $130 at a corner store. The full price breakdown sets out every tier.
Buying for your own use is legal. Reselling is not. Provinces also set their own rules about how much unstamped tobacco a person may hold, and those rules differ, so if you are planning a very large order it is worth checking what your own province says.
Being straight about this, because a page that only says "yes, it's fine" is not much use:
Is it legal to buy native cigarettes online in Canada? Yes, for adults, where the seller and the buyer both meet the rules. The seller must be a genuine Indigenous retailer selling on territory; the buyer must be of legal age in their province; and the parcel is age-verified by Canada Post at delivery.
Are native cigarettes legal everywhere in Canada? Yes. The age differs by province β 18 in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec, 21 in Prince Edward Island, 19 everywhere else.
Can cigarettes be mailed in Canada? Yes. Canada Post carries tobacco within Canada with age verification required on delivery. Orders ship to any Canadian address, typically in 2 to 3 business days in Ontario and 3 to 5 further out.
Can I buy cigarettes online and have them shipped to me? Yes, to a Canadian address, if you are of legal age in your province and can show photo ID at the door. See the live shelf.
Do I need a status card to buy? No. We sell to any adult of legal age, anywhere in Canada. Some retailers in this market do require a status card and on-reserve residency in their terms of sale β worth reading the terms before you order anywhere.
Do I pay tax on them? Not the provincial retail tobacco tax that sets the price of a store carton. That is why the price difference is what it is.
Will I get in trouble for ordering? Buying tobacco for your own use as an adult is legal. Reselling it is not. Provinces set their own limits on how much unstamped tobacco a person may hold, so check your province before placing an unusually large order.
Are native cigarettes safer because they are legal? No, and nobody should read it that way. Legality is about age, tax and who may sell. Every cigarette β native or commercial β contains nicotine and is harmful when smoked.
Is menthol still legal? Yes, on territory. Menthol left mainstream Canadian retail in 2017 and the ban does not reach an on-territory sale. Canadian Menthol is on the shelf β see are menthol cigarettes banned in Canada.
Since the legal question is usually the last one before someone orders:
